President William Ruto has pledged to sustain boxing moments after Majembe (Portifas Odipo) knocked out Mbavu Destroyer (Ferdinand Omondi) in the highly anticipated bout dubbed Vurugu on Saturday evening, April 4, 2026, at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

In his congratulatory message on Sunday, April 5, 2026, Ruto, who contributed a total of Ksh4 million to stage the event, praised both fighters for their resilience, describing the match as “too close to call” and applauding the spirited performance that kept fans on edge.

”Congratulations Majembe (Portifas Odipo), on your victory against Mbavu Destroyer (Ferdinand Omondi) in yesterday’s Vurugu Championship. Both of you put up a spirited fight, delivering an entertaining match that kept us on edge, too close to call,” Ruto took to his official social media pages.
For years, boxing has struggled to maintain mainstream attention, often overshadowed by more prominent sports. However, according to Ruto, matches like this one demonstrate that the sport still holds the power to captivate audiences, promising to sustain the momentum that both Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer have reignited.

”This match has reignited the passion for boxing across the country, restoring fan belief and excitement in the sport. We commit to sustaining this momentum by supporting the sport, investing in talent, and creating opportunities to grow boxing across the country.” President Ruto added.
Meanwhile, the electrifying nature of the bout appears to have rekindled national interest, drawing fans back into arenas and conversations around boxing. Following the dramatic knockout victory by Majembe, over Mbavu Destroyer, the event’s organiser, media personality Steve Thompson Maghana, widely known as Oga Obinna, has now turned to fans asking if it is possible to organise a rematch after a section of fans expressed dissatisfaction.
Taking to his official social media accounts on Sunday, April 5, 2026, hours after the bout, Obinna invited the public to weigh in on the organisation of a potential second fight, possibly dubbed Vurugu 2.
“Rematch, ama a win is a win? vurugu 2?” Obinna asked.
Majembe emerged as the winner of the Vurugu Boxing Challenge after beating his rival, Mbavu Destroyer, in three rounds at Kasarani Indoor Arena, Nairobi, on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
Majembe was declared the winner by unanimous decision after scoring more points from the three judges against his much-hyped rival, Mbavu Destroyer.
