President William Ruto will head the Kenyan delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP27) in Egypt on Sunday.
President Ruto will attend the summit as the Chair of the African Heads of State and Government Committee on Climate Change.
Hussein Mohammed, a State House spokesman, confirmed that the President will give Kenya’s and Africa’s climate change statement.
The President would urge “implementation and fulfillment of agreements made over the last 30 years by countries with the greatest responsibility for generating greenhouse emissions that cause global warming.”
President Ruto will also lay out Kenya’s plans and goals for entering the global carbon market.
“It is clear that climate change mitigation and adaptation are at the forefront of President Ruto’s development plan,” Mohammed remarked.
Since taking office, the President has been in the forefront of climate change issues.
He has proposed an ambitious reforestation effort aimed at planting at least 15 billion trees over the next ten years in order to achieve 30% tree cover by 2032.
