President Ruto Inspects Key Mombasa–Mariakani Road Expansion Project

President William Ruto yesterday inspected the ongoing upgrade of the Mombasa–Kwa Jomvu–Mariakani (A8) Road, a critical section of the Regional Mombasa Port Access Road Project aimed at improving transport efficiency along the Northern Corridor.

The 30.4-kilometre project involves expanding the existing two-way single carriageway into a four-lane dual carriageway.

The works also include the construction of 12 pedestrian footbridges in Mariakani, Miritini, and Mazeras to enhance road safety, 3.5 kilometres of service roads 2.7 kilometres in Mariakani and 0.8 kilometres in Mazeras and a truck parking facility at Miritini with capacity for 1,000 trucks. Improved urban drainage systems are also being installed at the three centres to address flooding challenges.

President Ruto said the project will ease congestion, cut travel times, and stimulate trade and economic growth along this vital corridor, which links the Port of Mombasa to the rest of Kenya and neighbouring countries.

The Mombasa–Mariakani expansion forms part of the government’s wider infrastructure plan to strengthen connectivity, boost logistics, and support regional integration under the Northern Corridor initiative.
