President William Ruto has expressed his condolences following the death of former Permanent Secretary Prof. Karega Mutahi, who passed away recently.
In a heartfelt message, Ruto described Prof. Mutahi as a “firm and hardworking administrator” who served with distinction in public service, particularly in the education sector.
“Prof Mutahi had vast knowledge and expertise in the education sector and brilliantly employed them in improving the management and delivery of teaching and learning for our children,” Ruto stated. He extended his thoughts and prayers to the family and the broader education community during this painful time, concluding with a tribute, “Rest in Peace, Prof Karega Mutahi.”
Prof. Mutahi’s contributions to the education sector are widely recognized, particularly during his tenure in the grand coalition government under the late President Mwai Kibaki. He played a pivotal role in driving key reforms in higher education, enhancing the quality and accessibility of education in Kenya. His death was publicly announced at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi by Provost Evans Omollo, who mentioned that a memorial mass is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
Additionally, Olive Mugenda, chairperson of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, eulogized Prof. Mutahi as a pragmatic leader. Reflecting on his legacy, she noted, “His contribution to the education sector was immense,” recounting how he chaired the operationalization committee for the Kenyatta University Hospital during a crucial time in her tenure as Vice Chancellor.
Prof. Mutahi’s remarkable career began as a secondary school teacher before he rose through the ranks to become a prominent figure in education. His educational journey was marked by resilience, achieving significant academic qualifications, including a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Nairobi, and he will be remembered for his impactful work in shaping Kenya’s education landscape.
