President William Ruto has directed Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome to construct additional hostels to accommodate 3,000 more recruits at the National Youth Service (NYS) ahead of next year’s planned intake of 20,000 new recruits.Â
Speaking at the NYS passing out parade in Gilgil on Monday, the President emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding opportunities for young people through NYS training.
“I have already instructed the Ministry of Housing to provide additional hostels to house 3,000 extra recruits at the National Youth Service,” President Ruto announced, highlighting the need for adequate housing as the program expands.
He also directed the Ministry to develop housing for NYS staff, in line with provisions made for other services.
The President revealed that the incoming recruits would be involved in the newly launched Climate Works Mtaani Initiative, aimed at greening Kenya and combating climate change.
“National Youth Service will be supervising the cohort of young people… under our Climate Works Mtaani Initiative,” he stated, underscoring the program’s role in achieving the government’s goal of planting one billion trees by 2032.
In preparation for the expanded intake, the President also ordered the recruitment of 200 additional cadet officers and 500 private officers to support the NYS.
