President William Ruto has ordered the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, to establish the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit to resolve security issues in the capital.

During the signing of the Nairobi County-National Government Cooperation Agreement on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the President stated that security was non-negotiable for a modern capital city like Nairobi.

“I therefore direct the Cabinet Secretary for Interior to prepare and present a framework for a dedicated Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit,” Ruto directed.

In his directive, the President granted Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen 60 days (2 months) to prepare and present the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit (NMPU) framework.

According to the President, the NMPU would work hand-in-hand with the Nairobi County Security.

“We will make, and we must make Nairobi safe for citizens, visitors, investors, and businesses alike,” asserted President Ruto.

The President added that cooperation between the Nairobi County and the National government is nothing new, citing the regeneration program of the Nairobi River.

According to the President, the restoration of the Nairobi River is a County-National Government cooperation project that resulted in the employment of over 45,000 youth within Nairobi County.

Ruto urged Nairobi Governor Sakaja to create time and accompany him on an inspection of projects currently underway within the County.
