President William Ruto has paid glowing tribute to the late George Oduor, the long-serving bodyguard of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, acknowledging that he too once benefited from Oduor’s protection during his time in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking during Oduor’s funeral held in Ndori, Siaya County, Ruto recalled their shared experiences within ODM, saying Oduor was always present to offer security whenever the need arose.
“I came to know George during my days in ODM. We shared many experiences, and it’s true as someone mentioned I too was once under his protection. In challenging situations, George was always ready,” the President said.
Ruto described Oduor as a man of unwavering integrity and patriotism, praising his loyalty to Raila Odinga and his professional conduct as a security officer.
“George embodied true Kenyan values. He was not only a skilled security professional but also a confidant who could be trusted completely. His loyalty was unmatched, and his humility admirable,” Ruto remarked.
He noted that his decision to attend the funeral was driven by his belief in recognizing and honoring individuals from all walks of life, especially those who exemplify dedication and service from the grassroots level.
The President also expressed his empathy after listening to heartfelt tributes from Oduor’s widow, Mama Caren Auma, and Raila Odinga, describing the moment as emotionally heavy.
George Oduor, who passed away on April 2 in a Nairobi hospital after a brief illness, served as Raila Odinga’s bodyguard for nearly three decades, starting in 1995. He was 57 years old at the time of his death and was laid to rest at his home in Ndori, near Bondo.
