President Ruto Urges Companies To Support Local Football

President William Ruto has urged support for local football saying it has the potential to “unleash the commercial and social potential” of players.

The Head of State spoke after attending the 93rd Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

“Supporting local football teams and players can unleash the commercial and social potential of football, impacting present and upcoming generations of players in a positive way,” Ruto said.

He challenged companies to help nurture football talent from the grassroots upwards.

“This will give our young boys and girls the opportunity to pursue professional football careers,” he added.

AFC Leopards won the game 2-1, ending a seven-year winless streak against arch-rivals Gor Mahia.

Ruto, as a token of appreciation, gave both teams Ksh 1 million each after the duel that was attended by thousands of fans.

Also in attendance was former Prime Minister Hon. Raila Odinga, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba among other dignitaries.

In the match, Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) leading top scorer Benson Omala failed to convert from the spot.

Victor Omune made no mistake for Ingwe in a similar situation, while Maxwell Otieno netted the winner with a free header.

Former Leopards midfielder Austine Odhiambo scored Gor Mahia’s goal.

The loss dented K’Ogalo’s title chances as they slipped to second on the log standings one point behind Tusker FC who beat Kariobangi Sharks on Saturday.

The two sides will clash this coming Sunday in a potential title decider.
