President Uhuru Kenyatta has today inaugurated the 1.2 kilometer Liwatoni Pedestrian Floating Bridge in Mombasa County. – By Gerald Gekara
The sea link, the first of its kind in East Africa, will take up most of the foot traffic across the Kilindini Channel by linking Liwatoni on Mombasa island with Ras Bofu in Likoni mainland when it comes into use on 1st January 2021.
The bridge will free up the ferry crossing, which has been in service since 1937 to cater for vehicular and cargo traffic without disrupting shipping services.
Speaking to area residents who turned up to receive him, the Head of State said the massive Government investment in infrastructure at the Coast and across the country will open up the economy and create jobs for the youth.
The President also cautioned Kenyans against insincere politicians who continue to mislead and needlessly incite the public on the operations of Mombasa Port and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
He said the modern railway service and expansion of the seaport had created more business for ancillary service providers such as cargo truckers, as opposed to talk over individual benefits.
