President Uhuru Extends Curfew Regulations

Following advice from the National Emergency Recommendation Committee (NERC) on Wednesday, August 18, President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended Covid-19 containment measures for another 60 days.

Uhuru indicated that the curfew hours in Kenya’s territory will remain in effect for another two months, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

This includes 13 counties in the Western area, where the curfew was removed at 7 p.m.

For a period of 60 days, the head of state has suspended all physical in-person gatherings and events, including political rallies.

In addition, the President announced that all social occasions, including weddings and funerals, are limited to 100 persons and that everyone must follow the rules.

Furthermore, Uhuru ordered that all burials be held 96 hours after the death was confirmed. In the event that the directive is not followed, the government has warned to take necessary measures against management, workers, and facilities.

According to the Inter-Faith Council’s standards, places of worship should continue to follow the one-third (1/3) rule for in-person worship and congregational worship.

Bars, restaurants, and diners remain unaffected in the new changes.

After meeting with leaders of political parties in Mombasa, Uhuru announced the new containment measures. The Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga (ODM), Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Hon. Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Hon. Gideon Moi (KANU), and Hon. Moses Wetangula attended the meeting (Ford Kenya).

Political leaders committed to take the lead in persuading Kenyans to follow the Covid-19 containment guidelines and actions, which include vaccination uptake.
