After days of anticipation, President Uhuru Kenyatta has finally gazetted September 8, 2022 as the first sitting of the 13th parliament.
In a gazette notice dated, Monday, September 5, it was indicated that the MPs will take their oath of office during the first sitting and elect speakers for the respective houses.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Article 126 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, I. Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appoint that the First Sitting of the National Assembly and Senate shall be held at the Main Parliament Buildings in the Senate Chamber, Nairobi, on September 8, 2022, at 9.00 am,” read the notice in part.
Article 126 (2) of the Constitution requires the President to declare via a gazette notice the date for the first sitting of the new House within 30 days after elections.
The gazettement is critical to the business of the House since it’s at the first sitting that MPs-elect are sworn-in and the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker undertaken.
Meanwhile, Kenya Kwanza fronted Bungoma senator-elect, Moses Wetangula, for the National Assembly Speaker position while Azimio La Umoja vouched for the former speaker, Kenneth Marende.
