Prime Suspect Arrested in Kisumu Over Expanding Motor Vehicle Theft Syndicate

Police in Kisumu have arrested a key suspect believed to be the mastermind of a sophisticated motor vehicle theft network operating within the county and neighbouring regions.

The suspect was apprehended on October 7, 2025, during an intelligence-driven operation by officers from Kisumu Central Police Station. Authorities say the arrest marks a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle organised car theft syndicates targeting both private and commercial vehicles.

According to investigators, the suspect is accused of coordinating the movement and illegal sale of stolen vehicles, some of which had previously been impounded at Migosi Police Station under suspicious circumstances. Eleven vehicles believed to be linked to the racket are currently being examined by detectives after it emerged that they lacked valid ownership documents.

Police sources indicate that more arrests are likely as the investigation widens to uncover a possible network of collaborators, including rogue officials and car dealers.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned before the Kisumu Law Courts once preliminary inquiries are completed.

In a statement, the National Police Service commended officers involved in the operation for what it termed a “swift and coordinated response,” reiterating its commitment to cracking down on motor vehicle theft and other organised crimes nationwide.

Security agencies have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious vehicle sales or registration activities to the nearest police station, saying public cooperation remains key to ending the growing wave of auto-related crimes.
