Private Firm to Run Sh2.6B Shimoni Fish Port in Government Commercialization Drive

A private firm is set to take over the management of the government’s Sh2.6 billion Shimoni Fish Port in Kwale County, marking a shift toward public-private partnerships in strategic infrastructure.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) confirmed that the newly completed facility will be operated under a lease agreement to ensure efficient service delivery and commercial viability.

The move aims to tap private sector expertise in port management while reducing operational costs and accelerating return on investment for the taxpayer.

The port, which features a modern jetty, cold storage, and processing facilities, is expected to boost Kenya’s blue economy and increase fish exports.

Officials say the arrangement will improve revenue generation, streamline logistics, and attract investment into the coastal fisheries sector.

The deal is part of the government’s broader strategy to commercialize key assets while promoting sustainability and job creation in maritime regions.
