Protests Erupt in Bomet as Youth Demand Governor Barchok’s Resignation

Bomet town was engulfed in chaos on Thursday as angry protesters, predominantly youths, took to the streets demanding the immediate ouster of Governor Hillary Barchok.

The demonstrators, expressing their frustration, set a bonfire along the main highway, effectively paralyzing transport and prompting many businesses to close.

Carrying large placards and twigs, the protesters marched to Governor Barchok’s office, chanting slogans and demanding his resignation.

The residents accused Barchok of incompetence and failing to fulfil his campaign promises, as well as mismanaging county funds.

The situation escalated when a faction of protesters attempted to storm the governor’s residence, leading to clashes with police. Officers on high alert engaged in running battles with the demonstrators, attempting to disperse the crowd seeking the governor’s audience.

This incident in Bomet comes just two days after a similar protest in Nandi, where residents stormed Governor Stephen Sang’s office over delayed county projects. Sang eventually addressed the demonstrators, vowing to meet their demands and engage in meaningful dialogue.

“I am ready to engage with you in a dialogue and you have the right to be heard,” Sang told the protesters, emphasising the importance of communication between the government and the youth.
