Principal Secretary Mwangi has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering Kenya’s largest sports infrastructure project after leading a high-level, multi-agency inspection of the Raila Odinga International Stadium under the Whole-of-Government Approach.
PS Mwangi was joined by fellow Principal Secretaries Patrick Mariru (Defence), Dr. Raymond Omollo (Interior), and Stephen Isaboke (Broadcasting and Telecommunications) during the joint assessment tour aimed at evaluating the progress and readiness of the iconic facility. Senior Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officials and representatives from key state departments and agencies—including roads, water, and energy—also took part in the exercise.
The inspection forms part of an accelerated inter-agency initiative designed to strengthen coordination, assess project completion timelines, and develop operational responses to address any emerging gaps in the execution of the mega sporting project.
Following the deliberations, the team expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction, noting that the stadium has surpassed an 80 per cent overall completion rate. With the bulk of structural works already finalized, ongoing activities such as landscaping and the development of outdoor football pitches are on track for timely completion.
The fast-tracked delivery of the stadium is seen as critical as Kenya prepares to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next year under the Pamoja Countries AFCON arrangement, and ultimately the 2027 continental football showpiece. PS Mwangi noted that the project underscores the government’s unwavering commitment—under the leadership of President H.E. Dr. William Ruto—to successfully host major international sporting events.
Featuring a breath-taking façade, giant shields, a Teflon roof canopy, and luxury skyboxes, the Raila Odinga International Stadium is expected to be a star attraction during the AFCON tournament.
Beyond its role as a competition venue, the stadium stands as a powerful architectural symbol of Kenya’s determination to transform its sporting landscape—delivering world-class infrastructure not only for the present generation, but also for posterity.
