Rachel Ruto Mourns Members Of Joyful Women Who Were Swept Away By Floods

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has mourned the demise of at least eight people who were swept away by floods in Mukaa area, Makueni County.
The First Lady said that she was deeply saddened to learn of the unfortunate incident that happened to some of their Joyful Women members from Makueni County.
“I have been informed that the members traveling back from the Joyful Women 14th Anniversary celebrations held at Kasarani Stadium on 23rd November 2023, were swept away while trying to cross River Muooni on foot,” she said.
Adding: “On my behalf and that of Joyful Women Organization, I sincerely express my utmost sympathies to the affected families. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends at this difficult time.”

The eight, according to reports, were part of a group of people coming back from Nairobi where they had attended an event organized by the First Lady.

Confirmed reports indicated that they were attempting to cross River Muuoni which was swollen due to the ongoing enhanced rains experienced in the country.

As per reports from the scene, drivers from a nearby town had warned against trying to cross the river in light of the heavy rains that had pounded the area.

However, the group reportedly ignored the warnings and proceeded towards the river.

Witnesses further explained that the seven had been sitting on a floating log in the river after being overwhelmed by the water.

However, flash floods swept them into the water and thus leading to the unfortunate incident.
