Racing Club de Lens Opposes Fixture Change, Raises Concerns Over Sporting Fairness

By Peter John

Racing Club de Lens has issued a firm communiqué rejecting any proposal to reschedule its upcoming Ligue 1 clash against Paris Saint-Germain, insisting that the match—scheduled for mid-March—should proceed as originally agreed, even as PSG prepares for a crucial European fixture against Liverpool FC shortly afterward.

The club noted that the match date, finalized on March 6, had been accepted by all parties.

From the outset, Lens communicated its opposition to any changes, choosing initially to remain silent.

However, increasing public debate around a possible rescheduling—reportedly to ease PSG’s preparations for their upcoming European tie—has prompted the club to respond.

Lens’ statement highlights what it views as a growing imbalance in French football, where domestic fixtures risk being adjusted to accommodate the continental ambitions of elite clubs.

The club warned that shifting the match would leave them without competitive action for up to 15 days, followed by a congested run of matches every three days conditions they argue are neither fair nor sustainable.

The Ligue 1 side also pointed to broader structural concerns, suggesting that clubs with fewer resources are increasingly expected to adapt to the demands of more powerful teams competing in Europe.

This, they argue, undermines the principle of sporting equity.

Beyond the immediate issue, Lens questioned whether the domestic championship is being sidelined in favor of international competitions.

While acknowledging the importance of European football, the club emphasized that it should not come at the expense of fairness within the national league.

Reaffirming its stance, Racing Club de Lens called for respect for established schedules, clarity of rules, and equal consideration for all clubs—principles it believes are essential to preserving the integrity of French football.
