Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga has summoned a serious meeting with party members set for Friday, August 9.
The gathering, cloaked in secrecy, comes as ODM grapples with significant internal leadership disputes and strategic uncertainties.
A source within ODM revealed that Friday’s meeting marks the start of a series of discussions aimed at addressing these issues.
The source hinted at Odinga’s upcoming departure for a new role at the African Union (AU), adding, “Yes, there is a meeting tomorrow, but we cannot disclose the agenda of the meeting yet. There are so many meetings that will happen.”
Recent political developments, including President William Ruto’s appointment of senior ODM members to cabinet positions, have intensified internal tensions.
The exit of prominent figures such as Ali Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya has created a power vacuum, heightening competition for key positions.
The leadership contest between former ODM National Chairman John Mbadi and immediate former Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi is heating up, with both seeking Odinga’s endorsement for deputy leader roles.
The forthcoming meetings are expected to be crucial in determining ODM’s future trajectory, especially as Odinga transitions to his new AU role.
The discussions will also influence ODM’s position within the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
In related developments, ODM has endorsed Junet Mohamed and Millie Odhiambo as the new Minority Leader and Whip in the National Assembly.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna confirmed the appointments on X, expressing gratitude for the support from Azimio coalition parties.
