Raila Odinga: The Firebrand Opposition Leader

In his first engagement with the public after the Supreme Court revoked his presidential election petition, Raila presented a list of demands he wants fulfilled by Ruto, failure to which would result to consequences.

Raila Odinga, the leader of Azimio, has been a fiery opposition activist for most of his decades-long career, with the exception of a few occasions when he declared a peace treaty with rivals.

Since the restoration of multi-party democracy in 1992, opposition politics have been associated with Raila, who has run for president five times, coming so close yet so far short of his goal.

Raila briefly joined the ruling Kanu in March 2002 before splitting with former President Daniel Moi and joining anti-government leaders ahead of the general elections.

Raila was named Prime Minister after the disputed 2007 elections, and the country saw little opposition activity until 2013.

Raila reconciled with former President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 9, 2018.

Despite widespread outrage over rising living costs, there was no major protest in the country.

Only three months after the Supreme Court upheld President William Ruto’s victory, Raila began 30-day “consultative engagements” with Kenyans.
