Raila Odinga Hands Over ODM Leadership To Anyang’ Nyong’o

In a significant political transition, Raila Odinga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has formally appointed Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o as the acting leader of the party. This decision, unveiled during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Mombasa on Saturday, allows Mr. Odinga to focus on his campaign for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Governor Nyong’o, who has been a pivotal figure in ODM since its inception over two decades ago, is now tasked with steering the party forward. Mr. Odinga expressed confidence in Nyong’o’s ability to uphold the party’s principles during this transitional period. “In line with a recent decision of the Central Committee, I formally task our founding Secretary General, Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o, to step in and provide leadership to our great party,” Mr. Odinga stated.

He emphasized that this leadership change would ensure ideological continuity within the party, which has been a hallmark of ODM’s enduring presence in the Kenyan political landscape. Mr. Odinga lauded Nyong’o for his foundational role in the party and his consistent dedication to its core values.

Moreover, during the NEC meeting, members ratified various appointments previously made by the Central Committee, following the departure of some senior officials who have taken up roles in the national government.

As Raila Odinga embarks on this crucial phase of his campaign for AUC Chairperson, Kisumu’s Governor Nyong’o will play a vital role in maintaining the party’s momentum and addressing the expectations of ODM supporters across the nation. The transition marks a strategic move aimed at consolidating party leadership while engaging fully with regional and continental political ambitions.
