In the wake of growing personal assaults on judges who invalidated a constitutional review process he co-sponsored with President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga has called for calm and patience.
After meeting with Jubilee Party Vice Chairperson David Murathe and trade unionist Francis Atwoli on Saturday, the Orange Democratic Movement Leader made the statement.
The proponents of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Constitution Amendment Bill will seek a second opinion from the Court of Appeal, according to the former Prime Minister.
“Supporters of the Constitution Amendment Bill, including myself, have been disappointed by the High Court ruling. I urge restraint in the public commentary about the ruling,” he stated.
After the High Court deemed the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill 2020 illegal, the Building Bridges Initiative suffered a serious blow.
The judges claimed that when the President suggested constitutional ammendments, he overstepped his authority.
In their determination, judges Jairus Ngaah, George Odunga, Teresia Matheka Joel Ngugi, and Chacha Mwita further ruled that the President appointed committee (BBI Steering Committee), which was established via gazette notice, rendering the whole process state-sponsored.
So far, Attorney General Paul Kihara has appealed the decision of the High court judges.
