The family of former Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga Wednesday January 7, 2026, marked what would have been veteran opposition leader’s 81st birthday with a heartfelt message thanking all those who supported them following his passing.

In an emotional message, the family thanked President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and several international leaders for the support they received following Raila’s death on October 15, 2025.

The family also thanked Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Chief Justice Martha Koome, and the entire government for their outstanding support, understanding, and kindness.

They also praised the funeral committees for their work in organising a dignified farewell. Special appreciation was directed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for facilitating the swift repatriation of Raila’s body, which received full military honours in India before returning home.

Condolences and attendance from former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta, Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, and Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, were highlighted. The family noted that leaders who could not attend still sent representatives, a gesture that meant a great deal.

Gratitude was further extended to governors and county assemblies, including Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, and Siaya Governor James Orengo, for helping coordinate smooth transit arrangements.

Kenya Defence Forces Chief General Charles Muriu Kahariri, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, and members of both Houses of Parliament were also thanked for their coordination efforts.

Local and international media were commended for their professional coverage of Baba’s life and final journey. ODM Party members and staff were recognised for their steadfast support throughout his political career.

“Our special acknowledgement goes to the dedicated medical team led by Dr David Oluoch-Olunya, Dr Martin Wanyoike, Dr Eva Njenga, Dr Robin Mogere, and Dr Abdul Msaddi,” the family said, also thanking medical staff in India and Kenya.

The day, coming slightly three months after the death of Raila Odinga, affectionately known as Baba, was described by the family as both reflective and deeply emotional.

“The Odinga Family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stood with us during this profoundly painful time following the passing of our beloved Baba Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga,” the family said in a notice in one of the local dailies.

They said marking his birthday provided an opportunity to formally acknowledge the support they received from across Kenya and the world during the mourning period and burial arrangements.

The late leader’s birthday was also marked by messages of remembrance on social media, and a commemorative gathering was expected in Mombasa. Senior politicians across the political divide hailed Raila’s resilience, patriotism, and commitment to constitutionalism, noting that he dedicated much of his life to the fight for multiparty democracy, social justice, and inclusive governance.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka joined Kenyans in honouring the late Raila, paying a brief but poignant tribute on his posthumous 81st birthday. “We remember. We appreciate. We honour Baba,” Kalonzo said.

He described Raila as a towering national figure whose contribution to Kenya’s democracy and reform journey will endure for generations. Kalonzo also urged Kenyans to uphold the values of unity, justice, and inclusive governance championed by Baba throughout his life.

Homa Bay Governor Wanga added, “7.1.2026: Baba 80+1. Forever in our hearts, Jakom.”

Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho is set to lead the coastal region in commemorating Raila’s birthday under the banner ‘The Coastal Salute’ on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Joho said the event symbolises the enduring influence of the departed statesman and noted that Raila’s life was defined by resilience, purpose, and unwavering commitment to justice, democracy, and good governance.

“This Wednesday, we will be coming together to honour and celebrate Baba Rt Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga at 80+1. His journey teaches us that resilience is not the absence of struggle but the courage to walk through it with purpose. His vision did not end with him; it took root in the minds and hearts of those he mentored,” Joho stated.

He added that Raila’s legacy is a reminder that leadership is measured by the generations one awakens and empowers, and that his ideals continue to shape national discourse and inspire leaders across the political divide.

Born on January 7, 1945, in Maseno, Raila was the son of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mary Juma Odinga.

Raila played a central role in Kenya’s political history for more than four decades. He served as prime minister between 2008 and 2013 and was a key figure in the push for constitutional reforms that culminated in the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.

Following his death on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India, the government accorded him a state funeral and posthumously awarded him the country’s highest civilian honour in recognition of his service to the nation.

Despite his passing, Raila’s name, vision, and contributions remain deeply etched in Kenya’s consciousness.

His life and work continue to be celebrated through commemorations, Kang’o ka Jaramogi visits, and reflections on his leadership, demonstrating the lasting impact of a leader whose commitment to democracy and social justice will not be forgotten.
