Bunge la Wananchi President Calvin Okoth alias Gaucho was arrested on Tuesday, May 23, after walking into Nairobi Central Police Station.
According to a statement issued by the Azimio la Umoja coalition, the outspoken supporter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga went to the station to inquire about his phone.
Phillip Etale, Director of Communications for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), confirmed that the phone in question had been confiscated in an earlier arrest prior to the opposition protests in which Gaucho participated.
“Calvin Okoth, aka Gaucho, has been arrested by officers from Nairobi Area (county headquarters) at the Central Police Station where he had gone to inquire about his phone which was confiscated when he was arrested some time back,” read the statement by Etale.
Confirming the arrest, KANU Secretary of Political Affairs Fredrick Okango stated that the station’s police had informed the Azimio la Umoja team of the arrest.
He also stated that the Raila-led faction’s legal counsel had taken charge of the situation.
Central Police Station OCPD Doris Kimeli said that there are issues they wanted to confirm with Gaucho.
“I don’t want to confirm he is under arrest but we have him here for some issues we need to confirm with him,” she said.
While confirming that he was with authorities, Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei stated that more information about the developments would be released later.
This comes a day after he allegedly made some demeaning remarks against some leaders during the Jubilee National Delegates Convention held on Monday, at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi.
