Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, has rejected the presidential results in the just concluded elections.
Addressing the press at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Tuesday, August 16, Raila claimed that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, contravened the law by announcing the results alone which were erroneous and therefore ought to be nullified.
Raila said that Mr. Chebukati does not have sole responsibility to announce the results, but rather requires a unanimous decision of the commission or a majority decision.
“We were shocked to learn that Mr. Chebukati decide alone to name the winner of the 2022 election. He denied all the commissioners access to the results,” Raila stated.
Raila recounted yesterday’s events, where 4 commissioners walked out of Bomas and held a press conference.
He said that Chebukati’s announcement is null and void and that Azimio does not recognize the announcement.
“Our view in Azimio is clear. The numbers announced by Chebukati are null and void and must be quashed by a court of law. There is no winner or president-elect. That was gross impunity,” he stated.
Raila also stated that the IEBC has been biased before and their previous conduct in the 2017 election led to the nullification of the presidential election.
Raila added that Azimio will explore all the legal options at its disposal in seeking an annulment of Deputy President William Ruto’s win.
He accused Chebukati of deliberately trying to overturn the will of the people who voted on August 9.
Raila made the statement after meeting Azimio leaders in response to the declaration of Deputy President William Ruto as the President-Elect.
Further, the Azimio leader called on their supporters to remain calm stating that their legal team was handling the matter.
