Raila: Ruto Is Now Pushing For BBI

Azimio la Umoja one Kenya Coalition leader leader Raila Odinga, has accused President William Ruto of doublespeak over a bid to initiate constitutional amendment.

In his letter to the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Senate President Amason Kingi on Friday, the Head of State requested that the Parliament engage in a law reform that addresses four issues.

These are; the gender rule, the National Government Constituency Development Fund, the position of the Leader of the Official Opposition, and parliamentary oversight of the Executive.

“The memorandum of President William Ruto to the Speakers of both the National Assembly and the Senate proposing several amendments to the Kenyan Constitution is perplexing to many Kenyans and myself because it undoubtedly seeks to re-introduce the same matters that the Building Bridges Initiative had suggested for many months.”

Mr Odinga questioned President Ruto’s motive for resurrecting an issue on which he had already advised Kenyans not to vote.

“Mr Ruto passionately opposed it during a comparable period when he campaigned across the country from 2018 to 2021. I find it perplexing because the memorandum presents these proposals without acknowledging that the BBI reports, which are official government documents, contain all of these proposals along with the rationale for why these suggestions were deemed necessary by Kenyans who participated in the process “Mr Odinga elaborated.

Ruto’s push for ammendments has been thoroughly backed by his UDA allies. This has set the stage for a fierce battle between the government and the opposition.
