Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio One Kenya coalition, has claimed that the removal of four dissenting IEBC commissioners is part of a sly move to influence the 2027 general elections.
Raila claims that the removal of the commissioners is part of President William Ruto’s alleged mission to pick a group that is easy to work with and complete the takeover of the elections body in time for the 2027 elections.
Raila claimed on Thursday at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) that Ruto was looking for retribution against the four commissioners because they ‘did not dance to his tune’ during the August election.
“The Ruto administration supports this conspiracy because it wants to pick a set of user-friendly commissioners to complete the capture of IEBC for the 2027 election,” he said.
Odinga advised the commissioners led by vice chair Juliana Cherera to boycott JLAC hearings on their removal saying the process is unconstitutional and that Kenyans have moved on.
“This probe is politically motivated, it is a continuation of the witch-hunt mission that Ruto is on. We advise the commissioners to boycott it in the interest of constitutionalism and rule of law,” he said.
Raila, Makau Mutua, and Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka initially attended the proceedings surrounding the four’s removal, but later walked out to hold a press conference.
Raila’s counterpart, Martha Karua, claimed that the current administration was on the verge of totalitarianism and urged people to remain vigilant.
Karua claimed that the petitions against the four IEBC commissioners are intended to prevent them, especially Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, from taking over.
“We will not tire to remind Kenyans that if we drop our vigilance, we are in for a ruthless dictator than we have ever seen and that has not been witnessed in this region,” she said.
