Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga has asked Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati to disqualify him from the gubernatorial elections in Kakamega and Mombasa.
Odinga stated that the polls should be conducted under the leadership of vice chairperson Juliana Cherera while campaigning for Mombasa gubernatorial candidate Abdulswamud Nassir in next Monday’s by-election.
“Tunasema ya kwamba uchaguzi wa Mombasa na Kakamega utafanywa chini ya usimamizi wa naibu wa mwenyekiti wa IEBC, Juliana Cherara. Bwana Chebukati kama mshitakiwa ajiondoe kwenye huo uchaguzi awache ufanywe na watu ambao hawana upendeleo,” Raila stated.
Loosely translated, “We are saying that the Mombasa and Kakamega elections will be held under the supervision of IEBC Vice-chairperson Juliana Cherera. As an accused person, Chebukati should disqualify himself from the process and allow impartial people to take charge.”
Cherera was one of four commissioners who publicly rejected the presidential election results announced by Chebukati on Monday, August 15.
According to the quartet, the final tallying of presidential results was not transparent.
After being postponed twice, governor elections in Mombasa and Kakamega have been scheduled for Monday next week.
There will also be elections in four constituencies and two wards.
Odinga stated that Chebukati is now a suspect as a result of the court petitions filed to challenge the results of the August 9 general election.
On Monday, the ODM leader filed a petition to overturn William Ruto’s election as President-elect.
He claims Chebukati presided over illegal activity by declaring the Deputy President as the winner of the election based on forged results.
