Rally Fans Flock to Naivasha for the World Rally Championship

Thousands of motorsport enthusiasts from Kenya and around the world have gathered in Naivasha for the exhilarating fourth edition of the World Rally Championship (WRC), as elite drivers go head-to-head in pursuit of the coveted title.

The competition officially flagged off on Friday by President William Ruto is expected to give a significant boost to local tourism, with businesses — from small vendors to large enterprises — benefiting from the surge in visitors.

Hotels, campsites, and Airbnb accommodations in the area have reported full bookings, a welcome turnaround after a slow year for the hospitality industry.

David Mwangi, chairman of the Nakuru County Tourism Association, noted that over 100,000 rally fans were anticipated in Naivasha for the three-day event, despite the country’s tough economic climate. He added that the rally continues to position Kenya, and Naivasha in particular, as a top destination for both local and international tourists, thanks to its warm hospitality, pleasant weather, scenic lake views, and world-class cuisine.

To ensure the event runs smoothly, security has been heightened, with hundreds of officers stationed at key points to manage traffic, safeguard spectators, and give way to rally cars. Naivasha Deputy County Commissioner Josiah Odongo confirmed that over 800 police officers had been deployed and reminded the public that partying and hawking along Moi South Lake Road — a crucial rally access route — remains prohibited. He urged visitors to respect the law and observe traffic regulations.

Despite the sweltering sun and dusty trails, enthusiastic crowds lined up along the rally routes to witness the thrilling display of man and machine. Among them were excited fans from Uganda and Rwanda, proudly waving their national flags, dancing to lively music, and cheering as cars roared past at breakneck speed.

James Wenangi, a fan from Jinja, Uganda, expressed his excitement, saying they had come prepared to soak in the electric atmosphere. He described previous events as unforgettable and praised Kenyans for their warmth and hospitality, which has helped make the WRC Safari Rally a shared celebration for rally lovers across Africa.
