Former Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju has formally resigned from the political outfit after serving in the position for six years.
In a letter dated August 19, Tuju reflected on his political journey within Jubilee, recalling his work alongside former President and party leader Uhuru Kenyatta. He also traced his political association with Mr. Kenyatta back to the days of the Party of National Unity (PNU) under the late President Mwai Kibaki.
“This letter is to thank you and to pay tribute to our political association that dates back to the time when I worked with you under President Kibaki to create the PNU outfit,” Tuju wrote. “What I am satisfied about is that I remained loyal to you as the President, the Party leader, and as a member of the cabinet.”
He expressed gratitude to Mr. Kenyatta for appointing him as Jubilee’s Secretary General, noting that his selection “as a person coming from the Luo tribe, while the anchor of the party was essentially the Kikuyu and Kalenjin tribes” demonstrated inclusivity in leadership.
Tuju said he no longer saw value he could add to the party and opted to step aside, though he pledged to continue working with Mr. Kenyatta in future endeavors.
Looking at Kenya’s broader outlook, he remained optimistic about the nation’s potential despite what he described as “poor governance and public upheaval.” He highlighted the United Nations’ decision to transfer some of its operations from New York to Nairobi as proof of Kenya’s global significance.
“I hope that more Kenyans will be able to understand that even in the midst of so much misery and poverty, the potential of this country is up there,” he noted.
Tuju’s resignation leaves Jeremiah Kioni as his successor in the position of Secretary General.
