Rashford Makes Promising Start as Barcelona Down Vissel Kobe in Japan Tour Opener

Barcelona’s preseason preparations kicked off on a positive note in Japan, with Hansi Flick’s side securing a 3–1 win over J1 League leaders Vissel Kobe in their first friendly of the summer.

The match also marked the unofficial debut of new loanee Marcus Rashford, whose cameo hinted at exciting potential ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.

Rashford, wearing the No. 14 shirt, was among 11 changes introduced at halftime as Flick rotated his squad. Stationed on the left wing, the England international provided width and demonstrated flashes of quality in an encouraging 30-minute spell.

Though not involved in the scoresheet directly, Rashford nearly assisted Robert Lewandowski with a clever through ball and later helped create the decisive goal.

Picking up possession just inside Barça’s half, he danced past his marker and slid a precise ball into Lewandowski, who turned provider for debutant Roony Bardghji to restore Barcelona’s lead.

It was a cameo of “nearly moments” for the former Manchester United forward, who also mishit a promising first-time effort wide.

Nevertheless, his willingness to take risks and stretch play stood out in an otherwise routine outing for Flick’s new-look side.

Barcelona had initially considered hosting the match at home due to logistical issues, but the fixture went ahead in Japan as planned. The La Liga champions will now continue their tour in South Korea with two more friendlies lined up.

Rashford’s next opportunity to impress is expected to come against FC Seoul on July 31. With Barcelona still working to finalise his La Liga registration, each appearance this summer could prove vital in making his loan spell a success—and reigniting a career that lost its spark at Old Trafford.
