Fresh troubles have engulfed Joshua Mutui Maingi, the man previously charged with impersonating a Kenya Air Force Brigadier, after he was hauled back to court to face new accusations in an expanding fraud scandal involving fake Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment promises.
Maingi, who had only a day earlier been dramatically rearrested outside the Milimani Law Courts over an alleged Sh1.2 million recruitment scam, is now staring at an additional charge of obtaining money by false pretenses.
According to the prosecution on the new charge, he is accused of swindling a woman, Brenda Otieno, KSh 610,000 by falsely claiming he could secure KDF admission for her relative.
The prosecution told the court that on 21st October 2025 in Kilimani, Nairobi, Maingi alias “Brigadier Muimi” jointly with others who were not before the court, pretended he had the influence and capacity to secure KDF opportunities, a claim the state says he knew to be false.
He was arrested again on 9th December 2025 and formally presented in court on 10th December 2025, where investigators requested more time to widen their probe into what now appears to be a broader recruitment racket targeting unsuspecting families.
Maingi, who is already battling an earlier fraud case, was released on a Sh500,000 bond with surety of similar amount or Sh100,000 cash bail in the new matter.
The court ordered that he be remanded at Central Police Station pending the processing of his release.
The pretrial hearing for the latest charge has been scheduled for 12th January 2026.
