Chelsea defender Reece James has withdrawn from the England national team squad after sustaining an injury during his club’s 2–1 Premier League victory over Liverpool on Saturday.
The Football Association confirmed the development on Monday, noting that James, who completed the full match, has returned to Chelsea for further medical assessment and treatment. The extent of his injury has not yet been disclosed.
In his place, Manchester City midfielder Nico O’Reilly has been called up to the senior England squad for the first time.
The 20-year-old has impressed with consistent performances at club level and will join the team ahead of their upcoming fixtures against Wales and Latvia.
James’s withdrawal adds to England’s growing list of injury concerns as manager Gareth Southgate continues preparations for the two international matches.
