Renowned Kenyan Journalist and Author Rasna Warah Passes Away

Renowned Kenyan writer and journalist Rasna Warah has passed away after a battle with an undisclosed illness. Her family confirmed the news on social media, saying she died on January 11, 2025.

Warah, who lived in Malindi, was a celebrated figure in the Kenyan literary and journalistic circle. Her career spanned over three decades, during which she worked as an editor at the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).

She is also the author of several bestselling books, including “War Crimes,” “Mogadishu Then and Now,” “UNsilenced,” and “Triple Heritage.”

Warah’s literary contributions are a testament to her dedication to storytelling and her passion for shedding light on critical issues affecting Somalia. Her work has been featured in prominent publications, including the Mail and Guardian, the East African, Cityscapes, State of the World, UN Chronicle, and Kwani?

In addition to her literary pursuits, Warah played a key role in shaping the United Nations’ approach to urban development through her work on the State of the World’s Cities report from 1994 to 2009.
