Rex Masai Inquest: Witnesses Detail Shooting Scene

The inquest into the death of Rex Masai, who was allegedly shot during anti-government protests, resumed today at the Milimani Law Courts with crucial testimonies from a crime scene investigator and a police officer.

Crime Scene Investigator Paul Njihia took the stand today at Milimani Law courts to testify in Rex Maasai’s Inquest hearing

He told the court that police fired shots along Mama Ngina Street on June 20, 2024—the day Masai died. Njihia presented photographic evidence and a scene sketch to explain how the shooting unfolded.

He revealed that a damaged bullet was recovered and later confirmed through a ballistic report dated August 8, 2024, to be live ammunition. This was contrary to what the former OCPD who had also testified in court said.

Blood swabs taken from the scene also matched Masai’s DNA, confirming he was shot at the protest site.

Rex Kanyike Masai was shot and killed in Nairobi’s city centre as police battled anti-tax protesters in June 2024.

He was rushed to Bliss Hospital along Nairobi’s Moi Avenue, where he was pronounced dead.
