Rex Masai’s death inquest continues as witness recounts police brutality during Gen Z protets

The public inquest hearing of the murder of Rex Masai has revealed how police officers turned a request by protesters to help a critically injured GenZ protestor get medical assistance.

Today a civilian witness recounted before Magistrate Geofrey Onsarigo at Milimani Law Courts how police officers allegedly directed a group of protestors to abandon an injured protestor to die by himself by the roadside.

Mekatilili Mweru, a poultry farmer told court that on the day Rex Masai met his death allegedly by a bullet fired by a police officer, a Youngman approached a group of police officers and informed them that there was a gentleman lying on a pool of blood and he needed emergency medical care.

In response the police officers told the good Samaritan to let the injured citizen die by himself. “The police officers told him ‘huyo mwacheni tu akufie hapo” Mekatilili told the Court.

She told the court that on June 24, 2024, as police officers cracked down on demonstrators in Nairobi’s CBD, her friend Laban Njoroge pointed out a young man lying in a pool of blood.

She also narrated before the court how she suffered police brutality during the protests while fleeing away from the police.

Her version of events during the demonstrations was corroborated by Laban Njoroge Njoki, a bodaboda operator who was with her during the ordeal.

The inquest into Rex Masai’s tragic death will proceed on May 12, 2025, with about ten more witnesses expected to shed light on what transpired on the fateful day.
