Rex Masai’s father painfully narrates how his son lost his life from a police bullet

The father to slain Rex Kanyike Masai takes Court through the fresh wounds in the hearts of parents whose children were slain on the streets of Nairobi Kenya, during the Gen-Z June 2024 National anti-finance bill protests.

When the history of Kenyans Peaceful demonstrations as enshrined for in Article 37 of the Kenyan Constitution 2010, will be rewritten, Kenyans will remember the 25th of June 2024 when for the first time in history the Iconic Parliament building was stormed by thousands of young Kenyans filled with rage following the passing of the controversial 2024 finance bill.

However, parents of Rex Kanyike Masai will this day as the day when their lives took a turn for the worse following the demise of their first born son allegedly in the hands of police officers.

The father to the late Rex Masai, Mr. Chriphine Odawa today took the stand to explain the very sad moment after receiving the heartbreaking news of the death of his son.

He told Court that on June 20, 2024, he was going through his duties at the Nairobi CBD as usual when he felt unwell at around 1PM and proceeded home.

It was his testimony that as he was at his house when at around 7PM his wife called him informing him that Rex had been shot dead.

“Received a call from my wife crying saying Rex is dead Rex has been shot. I couldn’t believe whatever she was saying then I just hanged up the phone and threw it on the table…”

He told court that at 7:30PM the mother to Rex confirmed to him that indeed Rex was dead.

It was at this time, according to the father that him and the other family members accompanied by family friends proceeded to Blis Hospital where they found the lifeless body of their son’s Rex body on a pool of blood.

Rex had been shot on his left thigh and Doctors confirmed that he died as a result of excessive loss of blood.

Ironically, a Doctor at Bliss Hospital allegedly told the parents to the late Rex that the killer bullet was still inside the body.

However, after police officers from Central Police Station confiscated the body and transferred it to City mortuary, Doctor Johansen Oduor during the postmortem said the bullet went through.

In closing his testimony, the father to late Rex Masai pleaded with Court to serve him justice for the untimely death of his son.

The Inquest will proceed on February 5, 2025.
