Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of discriminatory issuance of national identification documents, alleging that access to IDs is being influenced by political considerations.
Speaking in Kiambu during the unveiling of the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 elections, Gachagua claimed that regions perceived to oppose President William Ruto are experiencing delays in ID processing.
“As we go towards the General Election, William Ruto and his people are sensing defeat and have decided to have selective issuance of IDs,” he said.
He alleged that applicants in areas considered supportive of the government receive IDs within days, while others face prolonged delays.
“In Nakuru, communities that support William Ruto are being issued IDs within 2-3 days… Communities perceived to be against William Ruto are taking between 3-4 months,” Gachagua claimed.
The former Deputy President warned that such practices undermine equal access to identification, insisting that all eligible citizens should be treated fairly regardless of political affiliation.
“All Kenyan children deserve IDs. Whether they support or oppose William Ruto,” he said.
Gachagua further threatened to mobilise protests if the alleged discrimination continues, putting the registrar of persons on notice.
“If this discrimination does not stop, we shall request our Gen Zs to occupy registration centres, Huduma centres and your offices in Nairobi,” he added.
His remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, with identification documents playing a critical role in voter registration and participation.
