Rigathi Gachagua Now Wants Ruto At ICC Over Alleged Govt-Sponsored Gang

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on Members of Parliament allied to him to initiate a push for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the alleged resurgence of a criminal gang he claims is being sponsored by the current government.

Speaking during a Sunday church service in Nyeri County, Gachagua alleged that the gang, notorious for crimes against humanity, has been regrouped to terrorize residents of the Mount Kenya region.

Historical Crimes Resurface

Gachagua likened the current situation to the late 1980s during President Moi’s era, accusing the government of using a similar gang to punish dissenters in the region. He cited a chilling incident in 2009 when the group allegedly attacked a village in Nyeri County, killing 29 people and committing heinous acts, including rape.

“This gang is known to have committed crimes against humanity. Now, with the sponsorship of the government, they have come back, and for sure they have started,” Gachagua stated.

He praised the late Interior Minister John Michuki for neutralizing the group during its previous reign of terror and criticized the National Police Service (NPS) for failing to protect Kenyans.

Call for ICC Action

Gachagua directed Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia and other allies to assemble a team of lawyers to document the alleged atrocities committed by the gang in the 1990s and engage the ICC to demand justice.

“Document the atrocities and start engaging the ICC. These were crimes against humanity, and the perpetrators must be brought to book,” he asserted.

Criticism of the State

Gachagua did not hold back in his critique of the government and President William Ruto, warning that the president could be held accountable for any harm caused by the gang. He also condemned the state’s inaction on the rising cases of abductions, accusing leaders of turning a blind eye to the plight of families whose loved ones are missing or have been found dead.

Since his ousting in October 2024, Gachagua has remained a vocal critic of the administration, accusing leaders of lacking integrity and mishandling national crises.

Flanked by Key Allies

The former Deputy President was accompanied by his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, and Members of the County Assembly led by Speaker James Gichuhi.

Gachagua’s comments have stirred public discourse, with many awaiting the government’s response to his explosive allegations.

What’s Next?

The former Deputy President’s bold call for ICC involvement signals a potential escalation in the political tensions between him and the current administration. As investigations into the gang’s alleged resurgence unfold, all eyes are now on the government’s next move.
