Rigathi Gachagua’s Convoy Teargassed on Mombasa Road Ahead of Kamukunji Rally

The homecoming procession of Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua turned chaotic Thursday after police fired tear gas at his convoy near Cabanas along Mombasa Road.

Witnesses reported that moments later, unidentified individuals hurled stones at sections of the motorcade as it approached the Eastern Bypass, briefly halting movement.

The incident came as Gachagua made his way to Kamukunji Grounds, where he is scheduled to address supporters after arriving from the United States earlier in the day.

The day long procession has drawn large crowds along Mombasa Road, with supporters escorting the former deputy president amid heavy security deployment.

Earlier reports also indicated that journalists covering the procession from Standard Group PLC and Royal Media Services were caught up in the chaos, with one media vehicle allegedly damaged.

While no casualties have yet been confirmed, the Media Council of Kenya has in past incidents raised concerns about the safety of journalists during politically charged events.

Gachagua’s rally at Kamukunji is expected to be his first major public address since his return, with his supporters framing it as a show of political strength.

The heavy police presence and sporadic confrontations, however, underscore the mounting tensions surrounding his comeback.
