Rivatex, a state-owned textile company, has begun sensitizing farmers in Uasin Gishu County to increase cotton production for use in its plant.
Rivatex has formed several alliances to implement the sensitization program, which will also provide farmers with improved cotton seedlings.
According to Rivatex’s head of Corporate Affairs, Sila Kosgei, the plan is aimed at addressing a cotton shortage that has hampered the company’s operations.
Kenya produces an average of 5,300 tonnes of lint against a demand of about 38,000 tonnes monthly with the deficit being imported from neighbouring countries.
