Siaya governor Cornel Rasanga has incurred over Ksh 500,000 to maintain unclaimed River Yala bodies.

While giving an update into the investigations, Gov. Rasanga has ascertained that efforts are ongoing to preserve and identify the bodies.

However, the governor has lamented the rising costs of preserving the bodies, which is overwhelming county facilities.

Currently the Mortuary has a total of 38 bodies out of which 24 bodies are recoveries from River Yala while 14 bodies are from various hospitals or community sources.

“This is way beyond its capacity of 16 bodies and has seriously compromised the quality of this critical service at the facility… To date, the Hospital has incurred a cost of Kshs. 503,400 in the preservation of the bodies retrieved.” he added.

Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i has reiteriated that the government is committed to ensure that culprits behind the killings are brought to book.

The chilling discovery unravelled by activist Boniface Mwangi and HAKI Africa brought the nation to a standstill.

Police officers and other investigative authorities have been urged to speed up investigations into the mystery.
