Ron Ely, the tall and muscular actor best known for his role as the titular character in the 1960s NBC series “Tarzan,” has passed away at age 86.
Ely’s daughter, Kirsten Casale Ely, confirmed his death to The Associated Press, revealing that he died at his home in Los Alamos, California, on September 29.
Though not as widely recognized as Johnny Weissmuller, Ely played a pivotal role in shaping the modern image of Tarzan, the shirtless hero popularized by Disney. Kirsten Ely described her father as a multifaceted individual who influenced countless lives. “He created a powerful wave of positive influence wherever he went,” she shared in an emotional Instagram post.
Tragically, Ely’s life took a dark turn in 2019 when his wife, Valerie Lundeen Ely, was fatally stabbed by their son, Cameron Ely, who was subsequently killed by police. Following the incident, Ron Ely challenged the narrative surrounding his son’s death, questioning the justification for police action.
Ely’s career spanned several decades, during which he also hosted the Miss America pageant and appeared in various films, including “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze.” He retired from acting in 2001 to focus on his family, stating, “Late in life, I had a young family… I wanted to be there for the kids.”
Born in Hereford, Texas, Ely had a brief marriage in 1959, which ended in divorce. He is survived by his daughters, Kirsten and Kaitland Ely Sweet. Ron Ely leaves behind a legacy marked by strength, vulnerability, and a commitment to family, solidifying his place in Hollywood history.
