Rongo University Fires 137 Employees Citing Insufficient Funding

According to Rongo University Vice-Chancellor Prof Samuel Gudu, the move was necessitated by reduced capitation from the national government

137 Rongo University lecturers and non-teaching staff have been laid off with the institution claiming poor funding from the Government.

According to Rongo University Vice-Chancellor Prof Samuel Gudu, the move was necessitated by reduced capitation from the national government and the harsh economic environment that has driven the university into a financial crisis.

Prof Gudu stated that the National Government’s capitation has remained constant over the last few years, despite the rising cost of running the university during the same time period.

He stated that the decrease in the number of self-sponsored students since 2016 has caused financial difficulties.
