Alex Olaba, a Kenya Sevens and Kenya Harlequins rugby player who was charged with plotting to kill a witness in a gang rape case, has been sentenced to 6 years in prison.
Olaba was found guilty of attempting to kill a key witness in a rape case in which he is charged alongside Frank Wanyama by City Court Senior Resident Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo.
According to Onsarigo, the prosecution proved its case against him beyond a reasonable doubt.
He was also sentenced to two years in prison on a second count of interfering with the judicial process. The sentences will run concurrently.
In mitigation, Olaba’s lawyer Cliff Oduk stated that he had represented the country in Rugby internationally and that he was remorseful.
He also stated that he is the firstborn in his family and that he is a first-time offender.
Undercover detectives apprehended Olaba at Madaraka Estate in Nairobi in 2019 on the night he was planning the alleged murder.
Olaba had approached another party seeking ways to eliminate the witness in the case before police were notified, according to police.
