Russian air defence systems shot down 34 Ukrainian drones targeting Moscow and its surrounding regions in a wave of overnight attacks, authorities said on Monday, forcing the temporary closure of two of the capital’s airports.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the attacks began just before 10 p.m. on Sunday and continued for six hours. “All drones were destroyed,” he wrote on Telegram.
Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsiya, confirmed that Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports were closed for about two and a half hours from 10:40 p.m. GMT to ensure flight safety.
In the neighbouring Tula region, 24 of the drones were intercepted early Monday, regional governor Dmitry Miliyaev said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Ukraine did not immediately comment on the strikes. Kyiv has previously said its drone attacks target military and logistical infrastructure supporting Russia’s invasion, not civilians.
Russia rarely releases full details of damage from Ukrainian attacks, though cross-border drone strikes have become increasingly frequent as the war enters its third year.
Both sides continue to deny intentionally targeting civilian areas.
