At least five people have been killed and dozens more injured after a Russian airstrike struck multiple districts of Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of Monday morning.
The deadly assault, one of the most severe in recent months, targeted residential buildings, hospitals, and sports facilities across the capital. Emergency services confirmed that drones and missiles caused widespread destruction, with the hardest-hit area being Shevchenkivskyi district.
A five-storey apartment block partially collapsed, trapping residents beneath the rubble. Five bodies were recovered from the debris, while at least 10 others — including a pregnant woman — were rescued from an adjacent high-rise that also suffered extensive damage.
Further south in Bila Tserkva, a city roughly 85 kilometers from Kyiv, one person was confirmed dead and eight more injured in what officials described as a coordinated, multi-site attack.
Ukrainian authorities have condemned the overnight assault as yet another escalation in Russia’s ongoing campaign against civilian infrastructure. “These are not military targets,” said a Kyiv emergency worker at the scene. “They are homes, clinics, and places where people live and recover.”
There has been no immediate response from Moscow regarding the latest attack. Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, has routinely denied deliberately targeting civilian areas — despite mounting evidence and widespread international condemnation.
Thousands of civilians have died since the war began, and Monday’s airstrike adds to a growing list of alleged war crimes under investigation by international bodies.
As rescue efforts continue in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials are urging the global community to step up pressure on the Kremlin, warning that “silence only emboldens further atrocities.”
