A Russian guided aerial bomb strike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv overnight injured six people and set off multiple fires, regional authorities said on Wednesday.

Oleh Synehubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, said five of the injured, all adults, have been hospitalised. Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, reported that the attack ignited blazes at a city market and in nearby residential buildings.

Images and videos circulating online showed firefighters battling intense flames through the night as rows of market stalls and other structures burned.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city and capital of the region that borders Russia, has been repeatedly targeted by Russian aerial assaults since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

There was no immediate response from Moscow regarding the latest attack. Both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians, insisting their strikes focus on military and infrastructure facilities critical to the war effort.

The assault underscores the continued vulnerability of Kharkiv, which lies within easy reach of Russian forces and has endured sustained bombardments throughout the conflict.
