A massive overnight Russian airstrike on the Ukrainian town of Lozova in the Kharkiv region has left one person dead and at least 10 others injured, including two children, Ukrainian officials said Tuesday.
According to state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia, the strike was the largest to hit Lozova since the full-scale war began in February 2022. The attack damaged key infrastructure, including the town’s railway station, a crucial transport hub, and left parts of the area without electricity and water.
“Critical infrastructure, apartment buildings, and private homes have been damaged. Lozova has endured the largest attack since the beginning of the war,” said Serhiy Zelenskiy, head of the Lozova town council, via Telegram.
The attack involved more than 25 Iranian-made drones, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said were used to target civilian infrastructure, including a rail depot and station. Ukrzaliznytsia confirmed that one of its workers was killed and four others injured in the strike.
Emergency services reported a total of 10 injuries. Images from the scene showed a damaged train and rubble strewn across a railway platform.
Ukraine’s air force said it intercepted 29 of 46 drones launched by Russia across the country overnight. However, one ballistic missile and 17 drones managed to strike multiple locations.
There has been no official response from Moscow, and Reuters noted it could not independently verify the casualty and damage reports. Both Russia and Ukraine have consistently denied deliberately targeting civilians.
The attack marks a grim escalation in the ongoing conflict, with increasing drone assaults across Ukraine’s eastern regions.
