Russian Embassy Faults Kenya Blame On Fuel Prices

The Russian Embassy in Kenya has refuted remarks made by State House spokeswoman Kanze Dena that the country’s growing cost of living is being driven by the continuing Russia-Ukraine war.

The embassy declared on Twitter that the growing cost of living in Kenya and Africa is the result of ‘illegal unilateral sanctions’ placed on Russia by the US, EU, and their allies.

“To our Kenyan friends and partners, the real cause of the rise in African prices is not Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, but the illegal unilateral “sanctions” imposed on Russia by the US, EU, and their allies,” the embassy tweeted.

This is after Kanze Dena’s explanation that growing living costs and higher gasoline prices are a worldwide phenomena, not simply a Kenyan problem.

According to Dena, who talked to Radio Kaya on Tuesday, the cost concerns have been worsened by a number of external causes, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“The growing cost of living is not a Kenyan issue; it is a worldwide phenomenon caused by a range of external reasons, including the continuing Russia-Ukraine war, which has resulted in an increase in the global price of petroleum, which is a vital ingredient in production,” Kanze added.

According to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Kenya’s petrol pump prices are at a 10-year high in its last monthly fuel price review.
