Ruth Chepngetich Set to Make London Marathon Debut After Historic World Record

New world record holder Ruth Chepngetich is gearing up for an exciting appearance at the 2025 TCS London Marathon on April 27, 2025.

The 30-year-old Kenyan athlete made headlines in October 2024 when she became the first woman in history to break the elusive two-hour, ten-minute barrier, clocking an astonishing 2:09:56 at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

This remarkable feat not only stunned the athletics world but also knocked nearly two minutes off the previous record set by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa in 2023.

Chepngetich, a three-time Chicago Marathon champion and 2019 World Championships gold medalist, is now setting her sights on the British capital, where she faces fierce competition, including Olympic champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and reigning London champion Peres Jepchirchir from Kenya.

This highly anticipated matchup promises to deliver a thrilling contest among marathon greats.

Jepchirchir, the defending champion, holds the women-only race world record, having finished in 2:16:16 during the 2024 London Marathon.

With Chepngetich keen to test the limits of this record, she expressed optimism about the potential for another historic performance: “The TCS London Marathon always brings together the best athletes, and I believe this year will be as competitive as ever,” she stated. “With the strength of the field, I think we can support each other, and maybe the world record will fall.”

Chepngetich, who previously raced the London Marathon in 2020 and 2024, holds a unique place in the record books, being the only woman to complete a marathon in under 2:16 on three occasions.

The full lineup of competitors will be unveiled on January 16 at 16:00 GMT.
